Hellman’s has been my favorite mayo since high school. Although it’s pretty thick, I spread only a paper-thin amount on my sammiches. The only two things I consume which contain mayo (that I know of) are cold-cut sandwiches and potato or egg salad. Oh, I s’pose deviled eggs count.

Hardly anyone else in my family eats mayo, so we’re usually stuck buying a smaller container anyway. I prefer the bottles as it is as I find them easier to maintain and eat through. This bottle is like any other squeeze bottle you’d imagine, except it’s not this nifty little clear top. Or maybe it’s not nifty; up to you.
What makes it special is that it prevents the excess mayo from smearing all over the cap. The clear lid, I presume, is to prove that it doesn’t smear without opening it.

It’s pricier than it needs to be, but if you’re like me and don’t consume too much, then it’s fine. I keep mine at work and it doesn’t seem like anyone else uses it, which is fine with me.

It’s the same mayo as Best Foods … or is it? A taste test, July 6, 2015

Hellman’s is the mayo brand that was on our table when I was growing up on the East coast. The only brand, mom wouldn’t buy anything else. When I went off to live in the western U.S. I soon discovered that the same company sold the same product under the Best Foods name. If you are reading this review, note that the names are interchangeable, Hellman’s is sold east of the Rockies and also in Latin America, Europe, Middle East and Canada, while Best Foods is sold west of the Rocky Mountains, and also in Asia, Australia, and New Zealand. The parent company is Unilever.
Although I can’t buy Hellman’s in my local supers where I live now, I was eager to order this jar for two reasons. One is to prove to myself the urban legend that the mayo sold in the east is not exactly the same as the mayo sold in the west; and the other reason is pure nostalgia, I just wanted to have a jar of it to remember being a kid.

Now what’s this about an urban legend? Well, there are actually a lot of food products made by one company but sold under different regional names that alter their recipe slightly to please local tastes. The rationale is that people in the east and south prefer a product that is slightly more robust, while folks in the west prefer a milder flavor. In some other foods the texture is different, with eastern customers getting a slightly coarser grind than those in the west. In the case of this product the legend has been fueled by the company itself having described their product as “some people find that Best Foods mayonnaise is slightly more tangy”, perhaps due to the addition of slightly more lemon juice although the product labels don’t highlight any difference in ingredients.

I wanted to put this to a Hellman’s vs Best Foods taste test. Having eaten these two brands most of my life (and not being as pleased with the taste of other brand mayos), I thought I could taste if there is a difference, even a very subtle one.

I want to mention the special dispenser tip that Hellman’s describes in the ad copy. Yes it works great for not wasting product through “leakage”. It’s not that unique, though, I have used other products with a very similar tip. My local store is now carrying the Best Foods brand with the same tip. This container is not as efficient as a standard mayo jar, however, in that the squeeze bottle has trouble squirting out the last 5% or so of the product. It’s nice, and handy, for picnics but I prefer a standard mayo jar for home use.

Now what about the taste test? Using both Hellman’s and Best Foods mayo interchangeably on sandwiches, pasta salads, and other uses (including licking it from the spoon).

To prepare for the taste test I bought a jar of Best Foods mayo at my local store. I’ve included a note to Best Foods at the end of this review to explain why I had to buy a jar instead of having one in my refrigerator. I approached the taste test as seriously as any food or beverage tester would approach any test and the results are as fair as I could possibly make them in my home kitchen.

For the purpose of this review I sampled both products (plus a sample of Kraft Foods mayo) on the tip of a spoon as shown in the attached photograph. They were both freshly opened at room temperature (as we would store a jar of mayo in a pantry). Before actually tasting them I took a photo of the samples side-by-side under the same lighting. Note that the Hellman’s mayo is very slightly more yellow in color. This is apparent when looking at the product inside the jar as well.

Here are the taste results: combining the results of 3 tests, the Hellman’s was VERY slightly more tangy, which I identified as a little more of a lemon taste. They do not taste the same! It’s not an earth-shaking difference, mind you, but the difference is enough to notice. Neither tasted “better” (and I realize most people don’t eat their mayo from the tip of a spoon). But the taste is not identical. Now, you are probably dying to know how they both compared to Kraft Mayo (which is the brand I reluctantly use these days). Okay, I have never “loved” Kraft Mayo. I buy it because it’s cheaper and for the reason discussed below. Compared to both Best Foods and Hellman’s the Kraft Mayo tastes a little more of eggs, but it also tastes a little more of a very slight chemical flavor. I can only describe it as not tasting as “pure”. It is my least favorite of the three.

The rest of this review is directed at Unilever/Best Foods. I just finished making it clear that I prefer Best Foods and Hellman’s mayonnaise compared to your rival, Kraft Foods. Then why did I have to go out and buy a jar of Best Foods mayo to do this taste test? Because for the past couple of years I have stopped…

I only learned to cook (and shop for groceries) a few years ago, and I knew nothing about which brands to buy. One day, I was making a dip as my contribution for an event at work, and I needed a lot of mayonnaise. I had some left over and bought a new bottle, whichever was on sale. One was Hellmann’s, the other was another popular brand. When I started adding to the mix, I was shocked at the difference. The other brand looked so white. It was so tasteless. The Hellmann’s was so rich and creamy and had a great flavor; I assume they use more egg yolks, for one thing, not sure what else. Wow, who knew there was such a difference. It’s been Hellmann’s with me ever since. No other brand,

So the big innovation here is the squeeze bottle with the nifty top. Yes, other bottles have had squeeze bottles with a flip top. And you know how you get the gunk under the flip top? Well, you don’t get that with the Hellmann’s new bottle. It stays clean, and it even has a clear top so you can see that it’s clean.

It’s the little things that make our lives easier and neater and cleaner. I really like the new top, and I certainly love the Hellmann’s mayo. I can’t have ham without it.
