Matcha tea is really beautiful. It is so finely ground that there’s no …,
Tea is a lot of fun to cook with. Whether it be earl grey chocolates, tea smoked canapes, or matcha tea cupcakes. Tea can just add another layer of flavor and a lot of interest to dishes. I absolutely love cooking with matcha. Since it is ground very finely, it distributes well in recipes. I really enjoy adding it to buttercream icings and smoothies, especially. It doesn’t add an overwhelming flavor to the recipes; just a bit of nice earthiness. There’s an excellent recipe for the cupcakes in this cookbook that I have been using for years – Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World: 75 Dairy-Free Recipes for Cupcakes that Rule
I would love to try to incorporate this matcha into macarons and chia pudding next. I actually haven’t enjoyed an actual cup of matcha tea, but that should probably be on the list next as well!! I received this bag at a discount in exchange for my completely honest review.

Good option for the casual matcha fan,
First perspective: for the matcha layman (i.e. Me)
My first impression of the product was that it was very nicely packaged. Nothing fancy, just a nice pouch. It was also a good portion. I have seen the pouches my boyfriend gets directly from Japan and they all come in these super tiny (but gorgeous!) pouches. (Apparently the process of making quality matcha powder is laborious and meticulous, which explains the price and quantity.)
My only complaint about the Jade Leaf packaging is that the ziplock doesn’t close properly, which is pretty bad because matcha powder shouldn’t have prolonged exposure to oxygen/air. After my boyfriend made my matcha latte, my impression was pretty positive – it tasted like the standard matcha lattes you get in an average coffee shop in NYC.
My verdict: 4.5 stars
Second perspective: for the matcha connoisseur
My boyfriend is of Japanese origin and deals with authentic Japanese snacks and matcha as a side profession. He’s a bit of a coffee and matcha snob, and enjoys the process of brewing his own drinks. He regularly orders matcha powders directly from sellers in Japan (which is kind of why I ordered this one; I wanted to introduce to him an option located in the US and is accessible on Amazon).
After we tried the matcha lattes he made, I looked to him expectantly because I personally enjoyed my cup. Unfortunately, he wasn’t impressed with the quality of the powder. Based on his account, the powder didn’t embody enough matcha fragrance and the flavor was lackluster.
I couldn’t really relate to his explanation until he made two little side-by-side piles of matcha powder: one of Jade Leaf matcha powder and one that he bought directly from Japan. He asked me to compare the two – first, visually; second, in taste.
He was right, his pile of matcha powder had a fresher green color, while Jade Leaf had a duller color. (Pic attached) Taste-wise, his powder was much more refined and had a more pronounced “matcha” fragrance, while Jade Leaf had a more bitter, grassy flavor. We do agree that Jade Leaf’s matcha powder must be from Japan as noted in the description, but like coffee, there are different grades of matcha.
His verdict: 2.5 Stars
All in all, I personally enjoyed this matcha powder. I think unless you’re a matcha connoisseur, you likely won’t be disappointed with this one.
