Thin it down and the kid loves it!,
I’m really impressed by this infant cereal. Our six-month-old is not a picky eater, though she has some clear favorites. She will eat rice cereal but definitely prefers fruit flavors, so we have taken to adding some fruit puree to the liquid when we make the rice cereal. This quinoa and apple-flavored cereal takes it a step further, and the granules have a slight scent of apple (underneath a very earthy scent of quinoa). Our baby will get so excited about eating it that she jostles in her seat, kicking and waving her arms when she sees it.
The cereal is nothing pretty to look at. When first mixed, it has a dark brown color and a thick consistency, and if you’ve never tried quinoa before it does have a stronger scent than rice cereal does. We found that the on-package directions to mix 1 Tbsp cereal with 2 to 3 Tbsp water, formula or breastmilk resulted in a cereal that was too thick, almost pasty, so we’ve taken to reducing the ratio to 1 Tbsp cereal with 4 to 5 Tbsp liquid. Also, 1 Tbsp makes a LOT – we generally make 2 tsp cereal at a time. Prepared this way, one package lasts about 12 to 15 servings (and our baby has chowed down on up to 3 servings at a sitting!).
The nutrition information seems comparable with a rice cereal, although I think the protein intake is a little higher. This cereal is fortified with iron and vitamins, but it looks from the package that this is done through a combination of plant sources rather than a manufactured spray that’s used in breakfast cereals (which, for all I know, could also be done through a combination of plant sources or maybe it’s created artifically in a lab). If I have a concern about ingredients – and I do not – it would be about the sulfured apples. I understand this is a common additive in dried fruits and I don’t mind it. If I did mind it, I’d probably pick up an unflavored NurturMe cereal and add my own organic, unsulphured applesauce.
