Pesticides – A Brief Overview

Almost everyone is familiar with the term ‘pesticides’. In a layman’s language, they can be defined as certain medicines which are supposed to control pests and other insects. But what actually is the prime function of a pesticide? Let us have a brief overview on the very thing called pesticides.

Generally, pesticides are substances or mixture of substances which are mainly prepared in order to prevent, destroy, repel or mitigate any kind of pest. Thus, we can say, a pesticide is a chemical substance as well as a biological agent like virus of bacteria, which acts as antimicrobial, disinfectant, especially when it’s used against pests. Such pests mainly include insects, pest pathogens, weeds, molluscs, birds, mammals, fish, nematodes and microbes. These mainly destroy property and spread disease. Also, they acts as carrier of several disease. Though there are several benefits of pesticides, there are some disadvantages as well. 

Food and Agricultural Organization, (FAO) has provided a detailed and extensive definition of the tem pesticide. There are several types of pesticides. Most of them have been classified according to the pests which they are mainly supposed to target. They are usually classified by target organism, as it has been mentioned and at the same time, these can be categorized as inorganic, synthetic or biopesticides. Pesticides are generally used to control organisms which are considered harmful. For instance, they are widely used to kill mosquitoes, which are believed to carry several harmful diseases with them. Apart from that, it also kills bees, wasps, ants which cause allergic reactions. Further, it also protects animals from sickness, generally caused by contaminated or rotten food. They also help in destroying invasive weeds, which causes environmental damage. For example, herbicides are often applied in ponds and lakes. These helps to control algae and water grasses. These acts as an obstacle in human activities like swimming and fishing. It also renders the water dirty, foul smelled and unpleasant. 

While pesticides have several benefits, at the same time, they pose utter threat to human and animal life as well. Scientists and environmentalist have often frowned upon the over use of pesticides. They are believed to contaminate food stuffs, which in turn affects the human food chain affecting their tissues. Several cases of poisoning are often reported. 

Thus, proper regulations should be made regarding the usage of pesticides. This will prevent it from generating some adverse negative effects.
