What is Sustainable Agriculture?

Sustainable agriculture is the act of farming using principles of ecology, the study of relationships between organisms and their environment. This includes the human organism. Sustainable agriculture provides healthy food for consumers, both human and animal, while protecting the environment and human health. It can safeguard human survival and support transition to a sustainable food future by educating people about the benefits of sustainable agriculture and the problems with the industrial alternative. Simply by providing tools and resources to help consumers make better food choices, we can not just survive but thrive.

Groundbreaking Study Shows How Sustainable Agriculture Farming Practices Can Improve Yields

With continued population growth, the big question is how can we secure enough food quantities without sacrificing the quality of our health or our planet’s? The good news is, scarcity is a myth! Scientists at University of California, Berkeley recently crunched the numbers on crop yields and found evidence that sustainable agriculture, done right, has the potential to match (or better) the productivity of our current agricultural systems. Its high time we redo the math on sustainable agriculture. Thank God some scientists are even doing these studies.

  • Organic yields are closer than previously reported
  • Diverse organic farms already produce nearly as much food as conventional farms
  • Signs point to bias in the dataset, suggesting that the yield gap may actually be lower

Sustainable Agriculture Education

Sustainable Agriculture Education(sage)

If our society is going to develop and maintain sustainability, education needs to be in the forefront. Edmonds Community College’s sustainable Agriculture Education (SAgE) program is a successful component of that education. This Winter quarter the Horticultural Department is offering key courses as part of that program: Agroecology, Soils and Plant Nutrition, Vegetable and Fruit Production. The college is also offering a class in Horticultural Careers to help students to plan careers based on sustainable practices. These studies are part of the studies in urban agriculture. Along with these courses, the Horticultural Department is offering three new Urban Agriculture Certificates. Two are short certificates. (28-30 credits): Crop productions and Whole Systems. A third is Urban Agriculture Systems (42.5 to 43.5 credits). The entire curriculum covers winter, spring and summer quarters. Students may obtain any one certificate, or all of them, in just three quarters depending on whether they attend part-time or full-time. A two year Associate of applied science degree om sustainable urban agriculture (transferable to Washington State University) is in the works. The goal or Edmonds Horticultural Department is to cultivate a sustainable future for for agriculture, food systems and the environment.
