My son is celiac so we know a lot about GF products. I’ve tried probably a dozen GF pastas and this is maybe the best. I was really surprised that a mass market product like this would be so good.

It cooks up nicely and has a good firm texture and good taste. It doesn’t overcook quickly like a lot of GF pastas. It’s not much different than regular Barilla pasta.

It’s made from a corn/rice mix. Our usual GF pasta is a corn/quinoa mix, and probably has better nutritional content. But at least the Barilla isn’t all rice like a lot of other GF products. It’s relatively inexpensive too, and the box has 12 ounces instead of the 8 ounces you typically get with other GF pastas. We will buy this again.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What’s this?)
My wife has been on a gluten free diet for a few years now, which means I get to try a lot of gluten free food too. It’s just too much trouble to prepare two separate pans of pasta all the time so when we make pasta (which is often, since we are Italian), I eat what she eats. We have tried a variety of gluten free pastas and the vast majority suck. Most have a bitter or strong nutty/soy flavor and they are difficult to cook. Many are tough. We found one rice pasta that was passable but just barely and it had a very gritty texture. It also took a long time to cook. It was awful re-heated. Barilla Plus was my pasta of choice for a healthier pasta before my wife went gluten free so when I saw this, I thought we would give it a try. It is really good. I’m not going to lie to you, it doesn’t taste exactly like semolina pasta but it is very close and far, far better than any other gluten free pasta I’ve had. This and the R brand are the only 2 gluten free pastas I’ve had that are worth eating. The taste and texture are very similar to the real thing. The instructions say to cook it for 10-11 minutes. I cooked it for 10:30 and it was perfect. Both my wife and I liked it. So if you are on a gluten free diet, give this a try.

I was surprised at how good the Barilla Gluten Free Pene pasta turned out! It has the best texture and taste of any GF pasta I’ve tried. It is getting very close to that of wheat pasta. And, I’ve tried a lot of GF pastas.

I like my pasta a bit al dente and this came out perfect. The combination of corn and rice seems just right. But then who knows pasta like Barilla?

For exceeding my expectations Barilla GF Penne Pasta earns 5 stars from me.

    Update: Jan 21, 2014
I had dinner with friends with Barilla GF Penne Pasta. As usual it turned out quite good and the texture in particular was darn good al dente. Everyone spoke highly about how very nice the Penne turned out. This reenforces my opinion of the quality of this GF Pasta.
