Bobs Red Mill Organic Quick Cooking Steel Cut Oats, 22 Ounce — 4 per case. Organic Quick Cooking Steel Cut Oats are simply whole oat groats that have been cut into neat little pieces on a specialized rotary granulator mill. I am a bit of an oatmeal fanatic and have tried lots of different varieties. I used to buy the Bob’s normal steel cut oats (10-20min cooking time) exclusively, but started looking into quicker cooking oats when I needed something quicker to prepare for my baby (who doesn’t understand the meaning of the word “patience” just yet). These cook up perfectly in 7min, and are pretty much indistinguishable in taste from the 15min version. My baby (currently 25 months) is also a huge fan, and demands this every morning. Recommended!

Note: They regularly carry this at my local Costco in the SF Bay Area (a big 112oz bag) as well. The price as of March 2014 was $7.99. At the moment that’s a much better price than the Amazon price, so I usually get it there.

EDIT: Sadly, as of July 2014 they have stopped carrying this at my local Costco. Another Amazon member suggested it may still be stocked at some other Costco locations. I discovered that Costco also offers it through Google Shopping Express (which we have a free trial subscription to), so being a busy Mom I usually just do that now.

This is the best tasting oatmeal. Compared to Quaker oats and Better Oats brands, this tops them. I find a ratio of 3 cups of water to 1 cup oats works best.

I bought these because of reviews that said they taste like, and have the same texture as, the “slow-cook” steel cut oats. I find that to be very much not the case. They don’t taste as good as Trader Joe’s Organic Steel Cut Oats or the McCann’s (Irish) Steel Cut Oatmeal. Nor do they have the same chewy texture as the real thing.

If you haven’t tried the slow-cook steel-cut oats, you really ought to. These don’t taste bad (hence the three stars), but the regular McCann’s and Trader Joe’s steel cut oats are _much_ more enjoyable.

Maybe these quick-cook oats taste as good as the regular Bob’s Red Mill Steel Cut Oats (which I’ve never had), but I doubt it.

BTW, if I am cooking oats just for myself, what I do is cook up three or four mornings-worth of the slow-cook oats. After I’ve eaten my first portion, I refrigerate the rest, and the next morning I spoon some of that into a bowl, add a small amount of water and cover, and microwave it. Yes, even the leftover slow-cook oatmeal tastes a lot better than the quick stuff; and you don’t have to take the time every single day.

(As far as cleaning goes, the quick doesn’t stick to the pot like the slow does. To clean the pot when you eat the slow, just let it sit filled with soapy water a while before cleaning. A “Nylon Pan Scraper” also makes the clean-up fast and easy.)
