Kit’s Organic bars are great in general – the cashew bar is not for me though. (5/5 green stars), June 26, 2015

Kit’s Organic bars are like an organic version of Larabars, which are also pretty good (the Larabar Jocalat bars are organic by the way, so there is some overlap). Kit’s bars are made by Clif, which is a very responsible company – I’ll explain the green star rating later. I’ll run through the 7 varieties I’ve tried, but overall these bars are similar, so if you love one you’ll probably like them all. The textures are generally like fudge, a little softer than Larabars, although a few have more crunch. In terms of nutrition they are heavier on carbs compared to Clif Mojo or Trail Mix bars, and they don’t have the added vitamins and minerals that the original Clif bars do, but the dates add a lot of fiber and some vitamins (B6) and minerals (potassium, copper).

Cashew: With just four ingredients (dates, cashews, almonds, sea salt) it’s a pretty basic bar, and not in the best way. I can’t help thinking I’d rather just eat some roasted salted cashews, but then I’d be eating a lot more salt I guess. Perhaps if I tried it again in a different mood I’d like it better… and it’s by no means terrible – I just didn’t find it that tasty (8% sat. fat, 27g carbs, 15g sugars, 3g protein) (3/5 gold stars)

Dark Chocolate Chili Almond: The chili kick is mild but it adds a nice spiciness to the bar and that’s its main distinguishing feature. I will probably go back for more of these. (13% sat fat, 24g carbs, 19g sugars, 4g protein) (5/5 gold stars)

Dark Chocolate Peanut: Tasty – I wish the peanuts were in bigger chunks to add more texture, but the chocolate flavor is good if you like dark chocolate. Doesn’t taste too sweet even though (like all of the Kit’s Organic bars) it has a lot of sugars from the dates; apparently dates have a low glycemic index. I’m hoping that’s true cos I need to sleep now are trying four of these bars! (Update – I did!) (13% sat fat, 24g carbs, 18g sugars, 5g protein) (5/5 gold stars)

Cherry Pumpkin Seeds: This one is a little more on the inventive side. It’s a like a less chewy version of a cherry fruit roll up with chopped seeds inside. Was hoping to taste the rosemary but could not – I think it’s just included as a preservative. Would love to see some herbs and nuts bars come to think of it! It’s much lower in fat and a good bit higher in carbs/sugar than the other bars. (3% sat. fat, 32g carbs, 26g sugars, 4g protein) (5/5 gold stars)

Dark Chocolate Almond Coconut: It has a bit more crunch and texture than some of the other bars. Don’t expect a very strong coconut flavor, but it is there, and it also adds a little chewiness to the almond crunch. Lots of fat, but it’s from coconut oil so you’ll be fine! (23% sat fat, 25g carbs, 15g sugars, 4g protein) (5/5 gold stars)

Peanut Butter: This one has good texture and more protein than the other bars – both from the peanuts. It’s the minimal cousin to the excellent Clif Choc Chip Peanut Crunch bar. (10% sat. fat, 25g carbs, 15g sugars, 6g protein) (5/5 gold stars)

Dark Chocolate Walnut: This is a very mellow bar and one that may grow on you. The walnuts are tasty and very good for you too! (13% sat. fat, 26g carbs, 21g sugars, 3g protein) (4/5 gold stars)

Overall, I think Clif bars deserve 5/5 gold stars for quality (taste, nutrition, value) and also 5/5 green stars for social and environmental impact. 1% of Clif sales goes to either “1% for the planet” or to the Clif foundation. Clif have offset the company carbon emissions going back to the company start by helping to build wind farms and their goal is for half of their suppliers to be using at least 50% green energy by 2020. Solar power provides most of the electricity and hot water for their HQ, which is also certified LEED platinum; their small vehicle fleet runs on biodiesel; they have incentive programs to help employees use green transportation and green energy at home. They aim for 90% of waste diverted from landfill by the end of 2015. The packaging for the boxes is made from recycled paperboard. The wrappers, like most, are not biodegradable but you can recycle them (and other energy bar wrappers too) through Terracycle – see their website to get a free shipping label. All of their cocoa and palm oil is organic and/or certified by the Rainforest Alliance, who’s standards are considered to be as good as Fair Trade certification. There’s a lot to read on the Clif website under Impact, and it leaves no doubt that the company is one of the better ones out there.

Good tasting protein bar without any added sugar (sweetness is from the dates).
