Earth’s Best Baby Foods/pouches contain Corn Derivatives, June 12, 2012

I don’t usually write reviews but we have been struggling for a very long time, trying to figure out why our toddler constantly has a runny nose/sinus infection. We had her tested and she is allergic to corn. Well, one of the things we thought was completely safe and healthy to feed her were the Earth’s Best pouches, but we were wrong – they contain Citric Acid, which is a Corn Derivative – it’s not simply vitamin C – it’s mass produced by using mold and corn sugars. If your child is constantly suffering from allergy symptoms and you just can’t put your finger on it, try cutting out any product that has corn and corn derivatives (they do exist.) We found that the Peter Rabbit brand of fruit and veggie pouches do not contain ANY of the common allergens and do not use Citric Acid.

I’m giving them one star because they claim to be allergen friendly and they are not.

I’m a new dad trying to supply growing year-old twins with nutritious food that doesn’t contain all the extra crap that most baby food manufacturers cram into their products. I was thrilled to find Earth’s Best available at my local grocery store as well as Target, Meijer, Amamzon, etc. since convenience is a real benefit for me right now. After feeding them EB products for months, I ran into an article online about an epoxy used on the lids of the glass jars of EB baby food that is known to contain BPA and phthalates. I’m by nature a skeptical guy so spent some time looking into this claim. I ended up emailing EB directly and received a reply stating that the claim was true and that they were unaware of a single baby food sold in glass that did not contain BPA. They also told me to check out their “pouches” which did not contain BPA. My disappointment is in the company’s lengthy pitches about how nutritious and natural their products are despite being contaminated with substances now unequivocally linked to negative effects in people who consume them. And while I like the pouches, it’s important that you read the ingredient list before purchasing since many of them contain ingredients that are made in a lab, so not natural by any standard.
FYI, here’s the ingredient list for Puree Pears, directly from the EB.com website:

Ingredients: Organic Pear, Water, Citric Acid, Vitamin A Palmitate, Mixed Tocopherols (Vitamin E), Zinc Sulfate, Ascorbic Acid.

Our little one LOVES his yummy, organic fruit yogurt purees. One of the best additions to our routine!

This is a perfectly healthy, portable and vitamin packed snack for toddlers. Generous portion, sized well for kiddo hands, and an easy snack that is ideal on-the-go or when you want to encourage independent eating.

Each pouch contains a blend of organic fruit and none of the scary stuff. You will feel good giving this to kiddos.
