Small bag but looks are deceiving, July 2, 2015

I was disappointed at first as it’s much smaller than expected, but looks can be deceiving. There’s a decent amount of powder in the bag. I’ve attached a picture of it next to a watch so you can see what you’re getting. I really like the taste and quality though. I mix a teaspoon of the powder in 1/2 cup of hot water to help it dissolve and then mix it in 1/2 cup of hot milk. Add a little bit of honey and then I use an electric baby formula mixer to get it a little frothy (Munchkin has a good one for about $6). I don’t care for coffee as much these days so this is a great alternative. The packet is small, but it says it has 30 servings. 2 servings = 1 teaspoon so I can make about 15 matcha green tea lattes with this bag. That’s a pretty good deal. The bag is also resealable, which is great.

Great Matcha for Mixing, January 12, 2015

I’ve been drinking matcha for several years now, and have learned a lot about the different grades. The ONLY grade I would ever recommend drinking on its own is Ceremonial Grade – which is almost always sold in a tin, and good quality will only be found at a price point of roughly $25-$30 per ounce (30g) or higher.

The lower grades are referred to by various names I’ve seen: cooking, ingredient, culinary, cafe, (maybe others?) to indicate that the matcha is meant to be mixed with other foods or beverages. You’ll definitely find a lot of variance in quality here. Many that are sourced from China will be almost brown in color and be extremely bitter — avoid these. A good cooking/ingredient/culinary/cafe grade matcha should still preferably be sourced from Japan, have a good green color, and be priced at around $10 per ounce or higher.

This “cafe” grade matcha from Jade Leaf is a great quality mixing matcha at a reasonable price — the best I’ve found so far. It’s perfect for smoothies and lattes, as the packaging suggests, which is what I’ve found to be the easiest way to incorporate matcha into my day to day diet.

Anyone who tries to drink this matcha mixed only with water is doing it wrong — this matcha is meant to be mixed into things like smoothies and lattes. On its own it will of course taste bitter – but mixed into things it adds a nice green tea flavor (not to mention incredible health benefits and energy boost!)
