Best, cleanest quinoa I’ve purchased, April 14, 2012

Quinoa has become a staple of my diet, and I’ve been looking for a reliable brand. The taste is great, but more notable is that this has been the cleanest quinoa I’ve encountered so far. Most people, myself included, prefer to have the bitter surface compounds washed away. The biggest issue for me is that while most brands claim to be washed, this is often simply not true. Subject them to any kind of rinsing, and the water will foam right up (the bitter compounds are surfactants, and will create a foam like soap). Upon washing this quinoa, I got almost nothing! A little fiber was washed away, but nothing more. It’s entirely possible to just throw this quinoa in a rice cooker without worrying too much about washing it. For being both cheaper and less time intensive than other brands, I’ll be sticking with this one for the foreseeable future.

So I’ve been hearing about this new “super grain/food” recently. My local grocery store doesn’t stock more than the basics so I decided to try to find an acceptable product on amazon. This was the cheapest quinoa I found without ordering a huge quantity. Since I’d never tried it before I wanted to go with a small amount rather than getting burned again by purchasing a large amount of a product and then realizing I hated it. I’ve had to give away a lot of food for that reason. I didn’t really read much about this particular brand of quinoa before buying it because I was simply buying this to see if I liked quinoa not because I anticipated buying this particular brand again.

When I spoke to some friends about my new foray into an “exotic” food, I was informed that the new quinoa super food craze had caused some problems in South America where local people were finding it difficult to find a food staple because of the high priced demand for quinoa in the US. So I was pleasantly surprised to read that this company is not only interested in providing a quality product they’re also intensely interested in sustainable farming and working with the local growers. As a fair trade organization it appears alter eco works to ensure that the farmers they deal with are helped rather than hurt by the trade in quinoa.

Now I realize that I LOVE quinoa. It’s versatile and can be eaten hot or cold and it doesn’t spike my blood sugar as well as containing not just protein but calcium and other really good nutrients. So while I had intended to look at all the quinoa on amazon to see what was the most economical, the price for this product isn’t exorbitant and knowing that this company is a fair trade organization has cemented my new found loyalty to alter eco. It’s a grain that I can eat that’s healthy for me and my new diet/lifestyle as well as knowing it’s good for the people who farm it.

I was introduced to quinoa (pronounced keen-wah)while on a trip to Peru and Ecuador. It’s a fantastic food, especially the red version which is my favorite. It is a perfect protein, which means it has all the amino acids. Quinoa has more fiber and grams of protein than any known grain/rice PLUS it is gluten free. Use it where you might use a starch or find unusual places to use quinoa. I cook up a batch on the weekend and store it in the frig. I then add cooked quinoa to my morning yogurt or to warmed applesauce to make a breakfast or lunch dish. I especially like cooked quinoa added to vegetable soup or any cream soup in order to increase the protein and fiber values of the soups. Try it, you’ll like it!
