A good choice for a “first food” cereal, if you can find it, May 21, 2015

There are two versions of the quinoa cereal, even though the packaging is nearly identical. One is just quinoa, and the other is quinoa with organic and natural minerals, vitamins, and iron fortification. The simple, quinoa-only one was my daughter’s “first food” when transitioning, and it couldn’t have been a better experience. She l-o-v-e-s the stuff, even still after a period of pureed fruits and vegetables. It’s been relatively tough to find, though, and I’ve seen vendors mix up which version of the cereal they have available (iron or no iron). I’ve only been able to find the non-iron/quinoa-only version in these single-serving packs. I’m thinking this is the only way they sell this version.

My experiences with the iron-fortified version is the exact opposite: baby hates it, doesn’t mix well (gelatinous blobs), tastes terrible (isn’t easy on the nose, either), and comes in a multi-serving pouch. It’s also, unfortunately for me, easier to find at stores than the individual packs of the quinoa-only version.

With the growing concerns of synthetic arsenic levels, artificial fortifications, GMOs, and other variables lurking around your baby’s diet and down the supermarket aisle, shelf-stable alternatives to self-prepared items come under a lot of fire, due or undue. This product (the quinoa-only version) is such a value to have. The trend of quinoa as a first-food/infant cereal is a growing one; until some of the more prominent get in on the game, I’ll be using the NurturMe lines.

I’ve seen vendors use stock photos of both versions when selling the stuff. The stuff seems new and obscure, but make sure you’re getting the right version. You might find this product is currently more difficult to procure than you think…

NurturMe SQUASH, BANANAS, GREEN KALE takes the form of a package of 19 grams of powder. The powder easily dissolves in a half cup of room temperature water. With this small amount of water, the product is like a paste. Of course, the user can add more water, if you want a consistency more like a slurry or like a soup. The main flavor is that of squash. The color is dark green. The ratio of carbohydrate to protein is sixteen to one. Thus, this product if used the sole source of nutrition wouldn’t be so good at promoting growth. However, the package recommends that the product can be hydrated with either milk or water. The package label reads that the product (19 grams powder) provides 7% of the Daily Value (DV). This value clearly and obviously is FDA’s recommendation for infants (not for adults). According to FDA, the Daily Value of protein for infants is 16 grams, while the Daily Value for adults is 50 grams (see, Guidance for Industry: A Food Labeling Guide. 7. Nutrition Labeling. Questions. 21 CFR 101.9(c)(7)(iii)). The product also provides 20% of the requirement for vitamin A. Vitamin A deficiency is a serious and vital topic, especially for infants in third world countries.

Since I do not have any infants at home, at least not any more, I self-tested the product. As mentioned above, the predominant flavor is that of sweet squash. The product would likely make a great snack for adults use during a daytime hiking trip or during a camping trip. It is convenient. The envelope very easy to open (no need to struggle with scissors or with a kitchen knife).

This is really a great way to introduce veggies, especially when on the go. There are eight space-saving pouches in a small box. It’s going to be so easy to simply toss one in a diaper bag, purse, or in a backpack. The only thing needed is some water for mixing. There are several impressive things about Nurturme, a company I’m not really familiar with.

It only took a minute to mix and have a combo fruit and veggie dish. The taste was predominantly vegetable, but wasn’t at all offensive nor did it have an off taste. There was enough for two or three meals, depending on the size of the child or adult being served. I say space-saving because if this didn’t come in small, convenient pouches it would have taken up quite a bit of shelf space.

I do like the fact that everything is organic, organic, organic and certified as such. I did check out the Nurturme site and do like the social commitment to others. They donate 1% of the profits stating that “By purchasing our quinoa products, you’re giving back to the health, wellness, and education of the children of Peru.” Definitely a product that I’d purchase again. Not a thing I dislike about the product or the company.
